Why That Program Didn’t Work

“I did all the research.”

“It worked for my friends.”

“I followed all the instructions.”

These are just a few of the things I hear often when I meet a new client. I tend to follow up these statements with another question: “So how long did you follow the program?”

Then they say “A month” or, even better, “30 days.”

Here’s the thing about change, especially physical or physiological change. It takes awhile. Your body is a complex machine with lots of moving parts both internally and externally. It takes 4-6 weeks (28-42 days FYI) just for your body to adapt to the new program neurologically aka start feeling less sore and stop feeling so clumsy. AFTER that time, the physical changes really take off; muscle gain, fat loss, size change, all the fun stuff you ever hoped and dreamed for. The cool part of it all is that as you change, so does the program (if the program is written well); the weights get heavier, the sets get longer, the conditioning becomes more complex, EVERYTHING improves and becomes more challenging. When you’re challenged, you change. When you change, you open yourself to being able to take on more challenge. The more challenge you take on, the better everything gets. Long story short, the program that works best is the one that can actually last after you get the results you want. Consider it the best snowball effect ever.

Next time you take on a new program (perhaps take a look over at the “Training” tab here…. https://amptstrength.com/training/) give yourself a chance and give it more than a month. Yes, it won’t be as quick as you hoped, and yes, it will not earn you a fun shirt for conquering the “30 day INSERT NAME HERE Challenge” but it will get you A RESULT, which, at the end of the day, is what you’re really working for.

Which idea is the best idea?

HIIT, Intermittent fasting, Keto, Bodybuilder splits, push/pull/squat, BOSU balls, kettlebells, functional training, paleo diets, plant based diets, carnivore diets, the list goes on and on and on and on. There is always another “the next big thing” when it comes to fitness. By the time you feel like you’ve gotten skilled at the big thing you took on a month ago, the next big thing, which totally contradicts YOUR big thing hits the market. Then you change your mind and change course, only to go on for the next month and get pissed that you haven’t had any results.

Fitness is hard, man. There’s tons of people with tons of ideas and they all believe that their idea is the best one for you. Here’s the thing though….when it comes to the most important person in YOUR life, YOU (yes. you.), YOU are the expert. It does not matter which idea has the most research supporting it or which new fad has the best, most famous, following. What matter is what works best for YOU. The most successful ideas are the ideas that actually WORK.

There are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That equals 168 hours in a week. Don’t just worry about that fitness idea that makes 30 minutes a day super valuable. Don’t waste your time with the concept that makes you great for 12 hours every other day. Spend your time on the idea that makes you feel your best for ALL 168 HOURS OF YOUR WEEK. Don’t waste time, SPEND time. USE time. ENJOY your time.

There are endless ideas for what makes somebody the healthiest they can be, but you can’t pick the one that makes other people healthy. You gotta pick the one that makes you happy. It has to fit your work life, your home life, your social life, your whole life. Eat what makes you feel your best, do workouts that make sense for your schedule and that make you feel your best, and do it all in a way that actually makes sense for you. That is what I consider to be the best idea out there.
